School Counseling Information

Why Elementary School Counselors?

“Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skill necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, school counselors work as a team with the school staff, parents and the community to create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success. The professional elementary school counselor holds a master’s degree and required state certification in school counseling. Maintaining certification includes on-going professional development to stay current with education reform and challenges facing today’s students.” (American School Counselor Association, 2015).

ROLES OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring that today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. Check out the "ROLES OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR" link above to see all of the different ways that school counselors support students, parents, and staff.

HOW CAN MY CHILD CONTACT HIS OR HER COUNSELOR?

Students can contact the counselor At the elementary level, when your child’s counselor is unavailable, your child will be instructed to fill out a child friendly “Request to See my Counselor” form, which will be placed in “The School Counselor’s Box” in the library. *We always encourage students to initiate contact and communication with their school counselor. Self advocacy is a life skill and encourages self confidence and social skill development.

PARENT RESOURCES

The early years of a child's life are very important for his or her health and development. Parents, school counselors, educators, and others can work together as partners to help children grow up to reach their full potential. Whether it's a typical developmental milestone or your child is experiencing a difficult change, the "PARENT RESOURCES" link above will help provide support and guidance for you and your child.
